Sabahan girl climbed up a tree just to get better internet reception in order to sit for her exams.
Sabahan girl climbed up a tree just to get better internet for her exams. I think by now many of us have heard of the Sabahan student who spent 24 hours on a tree just to get a better internet connection to sit for her online exams.
18-year-old Veveonah Mosibin, a University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) student who lives in Sabanalang Pitas village in a remote part of the eastern state of Sabah became the talk of the town in just a day. She has been posting videos since a month ago during the Movement Control Order (MCO) to share about her life in rural Sabah and one of her videos titled “24 Hours On Tree | Challenge” suddenly became viral and has inspired so many people.
The 18-year-old student documented her experiences on top of the tree and uploaded the video to her YouTube channel on Saturday, 13 June 2020 and has since gained a tremendous number of fans and earned her YouTube channel more than 1,000 subscribers nearly overnight.
“Studying off campus as a result of Covid-19 and the movement control order, Internet access is not readily available, ” Veveonah said.

Veveonah said she did not intend to sit for her online exams on top of a tree. She had already built a tiny hut on top of a hill near her village which was also documented in her previous video for the best Internet connection preparation for her online exams. However, she found that it had collapsed due to strong winds and heavy rain over the past few days.
“I can’t believe it fell down. I already built it as sturdy as I could,” she said.
In her video, “It’s fine when I have to go for online classes and surf the Internet but for my exams, I need a strong and uninterrupted connection. That’s why I chose to hike up a hill to study and later on, challenged myself to stay and sleep on a tree for 24 hours to prepare for my exams, ” she said.
With a food supply of three packets of leaf-wrapped rice (also known as linopot), a bottle of water, some study tools and a mosquito net, the girl set out to carry out her challenge. Veveonah shared how easy it was for her to climb the tree, find a sturdy suitable branch to spend the day and night, place her supplies on top and then put up a mosquito net.
She spent overnight on the tree without a single complaint even though there was a giant hornet that had made its way into her treetop sanctuary. But still, that didn’t bother her to continue her stay just to finish her challenge.
“Hornets are very dangerous you know. If you get stung, it hurts real bad,” she said in the video.
Her strong determination and courage to get the job done in spite of the daunting obstacles have inspired so many people and the video has been viewed and shared hundreds of thousands of times since she posted it in her channel.
Well, she earned that massive public admiration, didn’t she?
